Mom would always say........"Who wants to make the "relish tray"............? Now I have heard this term many times before but this year the Word.........stuck in my head......."What is a "relish tray".......(its a term ladies used many years ago to mean a veggie tray filled with many things) Things such as thin celery sticks; pretty cut radishes; cauliflower nice pretty crackers ( the special ones in a box with shapes) would sit on the side. Another "relish tray" of clear cut glass and a divider in the middle would hold "those special pickles" dad bought. The lemon or orange kind or maybe baby gherkins......The preparation would begin a few days ahead with someone cutting and then placing these little precious gems in ice cold water to sit until their special day at the Thanksgiving feast...
And.............those glass turkeys.....( I wont see those this year)...they say Uncle Tommy (dads brother who is gone now) gave these to mom. There are two of them. And we always filled one with candy pillow mints ( the ones with all the colors) and the other with nuts....You could just see the grandchildren opening the "glass turkey" and popping a mint or two into their little mouths....The men usually would pass by the "relish tray" and go for the nuts in the other little turkey........Memories this year .........My last Thanksgiving with my parents was last year... They are both celebrating with each other this year ( I know my mom is happy about that) and with my sister and their first born baby that they never held but knew he was a boy. Grandpa Musser too will be celebrating up in heaven this year.........They are missed greatly but happy ; joyful memories fill my heart tonight as I write this..... Keep those traditions in your hearts and someday your daughter or granddaughter may write about them and use them in their homes too...............and remember

My sisters and I have heard this many times..."relish tray". My mom still calls it that...
